by Edgar allen Poe

Adaptation for radio by D. Chapelle

An Excerpt:

NARRATOR: Ernest ... Ernest don’t excite yourself.
ERNEST: It is the opinion of my (coughing) ... my physician that I shall die around midnight. I do not believe ... a little excitement will make any diff ... (coughing) difference one way or another.
NARRATOR: Are you ready to begin?
ERNEST: Yes. If it will put an end to ... end to the pain I am more than ... ready.
NARRATOR: Fine. Excuse me for a moment while I speak to Dr. Franks. Dr. ...
FRANKS: Yes?
NARRATOR: I think it would be best if I begin the process.
FRANKS: I’m still not clear on what you hope to accomplish here, but if you hope to accomplish anything you would do well to start as soon as possible.
NARRATOR: Will you be staying?
FRANKS: No. There is nothing else I can do here, and I have other patients to attend to.
NARRATOR: I would prefer you stay, Doctor.
FRANKS: I really see no reason for me to be present. Medical science has done all it can and I do have other patients.
NARRATOR: But you could record what goes on here. It may be nothing, but it may be important knowledge for medical science in the future.
FRANKS: I must admit I am curious.
NARRATOR: Then quench your curiosity.
FRANKS: I have other patients, sir. Still ... I am curious. Very well ... I shall return in the morning.
NARRATOR: Thank you, Doctor.
FRANKS: If I am not summoned to sign the death certificate before then. Nurse Archer ...
ARCHER: Yes, Doctor.
FRANKS: Have you pencil and paper?
ARCHER: Of course Doctor.
