"Menace at Midnight"

by D. Chapelle

Some Excerpts:

MILLIE: What is it Agnes?

(Agnes points at Millie and then frantically points to the door.)

MILLIE: Is there something wrong outside? I don't understand what you're trying to tell me.

AGNES: I'm trying to tell you you're in great danger and you have to get out of here!

MILLIE: What kind of danger could I be in while I'm surrounded by friends and well wishers?

AGNES: Millie, my dear, not everybody here is your friend. As a matter of fact those sneaky two legged vermin Bonic and Snaggle are just using you for their own personal gain.

MILLIE: That can't be. You must be mistaken.

AGNES: I'm so terribly sorry to have to tell you this, but there it is. You can't trust those two and you have to get out of here.

MILLIE: Agnes, slow down! You're talking too fast. Wait! You're talking! Agnes, you can talk! It's a miracle!

AGNES: Millie, dear, I could always talk. You see I've learned it's better to listen and learn than it is to speak nonsense for the sake of noise.

MILLIE: That is so true.

AGNES: Thank you. Now let's get you out of here.

MILLIE: Wait a minute! How can I trust you, Agnes?

AGNES: What are you talking about?

MILLIE: All this time we thought you couldn't talk and now I find out you can talk! What else ain't you tellin?

AGNES: It's not important right now. What is important is getting you to safety before something bad happens.

(Nora and Beau burst out of the closet.)

NORA: There she is!

BEAU: I told you there was somebody out here!

AGNES: (Aside.) I think this would qualify as something bad happening.

MILLIE: (To Agnes.) Does this mean it's too late to escape?

AGNES: It would seem that way, my dear.

NORA: Agnes, you may leave!

AGNES: And let's keep my ability to speak our little secret shall we? (Agnes exits.)

BEAU: Millie! I have some very good news for you.

MILLIE: I'm gonna graduate and be able to leave?

NORA: You're going to marry Mr. Bonic.

MILLIE: And exactly how is that good news?

TEDDY: Agnes, Millie can't possibly be in as much danger as you think.

AGNES: Young man, over the years I've become an excellent judge of character. You are a fine boy, and Millie is a wonderful girl.

TEDDY: I knew that, Agnes.

AGNES: And you must suspect that Mr. Bonic and Miss Snaggle are, well, I believe they are less than honorable.

TEDDY: But I still don't see what you expect me to... to... Wait a minute! Just wait a minute here.

AGNES: Yes, Teddy, what is it? Have you thought of something?

TEDDY: You can talk!

AGNES: (Aside.) Folks, I'm sure he's quicker than he looks. But then, he'd have to be. (To Teddy) Yes, Teddy, I can talk. Now what are we going to do about Millie?

TEDDY: We've got to get her someplace safe. We've got to get her out of here at least, and hope Mrs. Hester gets back to town before those two catch up to us.

AGNES: What do you think she can do?

TEDDY: Well, everything I've heard about that ol' gal tells me she's one sharp cookie and a straight arrow.

AGNES: And what exactly do all of these metaphors mean?

TEDDY: It means I bet we can trust Mrs. Hester! I bet the minute she finds out what those two have been up to she'll give 'em the sack.

AGNES: How can you be sure Teddy?

TEDDY: Nobody could build a town like this and not have anybody have a bad thing to say about them unless she was a straight shooter, and a go-getter. What we're gonna do is look her right in the eye and tell her the truth, and I just know she'll help us out.

AGNES: You're a very good boy, Teddy Noble. It is a pleasure to know you.

TEDDY: Thanks, Ma'am, but right now we gotta worry about how we're gonna get Millie out of here.

BEAU: (os) Right this way, my dear, and watch your step.

MILLIE: (os) Yes sir.

AGNES: More important we'd best find you a place to hide.

TEDDY: I say we face 'em down right now!

AGNES: Shush. There is a time and a place for everything and this is neither the time nor the place for confrontation.

TEDDY: Boy when you decide to talk you sure do use pretty words, Miss Agnes.

AGNES: Thank you, Teddy. Now we'd best get you to the secret sanctuary before those two get down here.

(Agnes pushes Teddy to the closet and closes the door and a moment later Teddy steps out of the closet.)

TEDDY: You do know this is just a closet, right?

AGNES: Yes, it's a closet, now hide!

TEDDY: Yes, Ma'am. (Teddy closes the door.)

AGNES: Yes, well... he is very handsome, isn't he?
