SAM: (Aside.) You know it ain't really like me to have my head turned by a pretty face, but golly she has such a pretty face. If I didn't know better I'd swear I've fallen in love at first sight. (He sighs.)

ANNIE: (Aside.) Golly. What a kind and decent man. Oh cruel fate to meet such a handsome and polite man on the day I'm to be wed to another. If I didn't know better I'd swear I've fallen in love at first sight. But I don't swear. Never. It's rude. (She sighs.)

SAM: Well, here you are Miss, all safe and sound. Ah, is it Miss or Mrs.?

ANNIE: It's Miss for the moment. Oh, how rude of me. I haven't introduced myself. I'm so sorry. I'm Annie Pleasant.

SAM: Good to know you, Miss Pleasant. I'm Sam Steadfast.

ANNIE: It's very nice to meet you, Mr. Steadfast.

SAM: You can call me Sam.

ANNIE: I'd love to call you Sam. (She sighs.) And you may call me Annie.

SAM: So, Annie, what brings you out to the middle of nowhere?

ANNIE: I'm here to meet my husband.

SAM: Huh? I'm sorry, did you say husband?

ANNIE: Yes, yes I did.

SAM: I thought you said you were a Miss?

ANNIE: I am, but I'm here to get married.

SAM: Really? I'm sorry to hear that. I mean, I'm happy for you and all, but I was sort of hoping you were a single gal.

ANNIE: I am, but I won't be single for very long.(Annie takes her hands in his.) I'm sorry, Sam. I'm oh so sorry.

SAM: So am I. Anyway, best ... best wishes and all.

ANNIE: Thank you, Sam. (They both sigh deeply.)

BELLE: (Entering.) Howdy, folks!

ANNIE/SAM: (Both are still focus on each other.) Howdy.

BELLE: You the gal lookin' for her husband?

ANNIE: Yes.

BELLE: Well, I'm glad you found him. You know Sam, all the years we been neighbors I never new you was married.

SAM: I ain't.

BELLE: Well, from the looks of it you should be.

SAM: I'm here to ask my neighbor for a favor.

BELLE: Good luck with that.

ANNIE: You're Mr. Lavender's neighbor? Why didn't I see your house?

SAM: Well out here things are a little more spread out than in the city. My place is over that hill a couple miles down the road.

ANNIE: This is so new, and big. Oh, I'm being rude. My name is Annie Pleasant.

BELLE: Yeah? Well, I'm Belladonna Slither.

ANNIE: Very nice to meet you, Miss Slither.

BELLE: Yeah, well you don't know me that well. Wait a minute. Hold on just one minute. If you two ain't married then who are you married to lady?

ANNIE: My name's Annie.

BELLE: And I don't care.

ANNIE: Oh. Well I'm not married. At least I'm not married yet.

SAM: Annie's here to meet her husband.

BELLE: Now wait just a minute! How can she meet her husband if she ain't married?

ANNIE: I'm sorry, I'm not being very clear. I'm not here to meet my husband I'm meeting my husband here.

BELLE: Oh, that really cleared that up.
