"The Tell - Tale Heart"

by Edgar allen Poe

Adaptation for theatre by D. Chapelle

An Excerpt:

ANA: You are most welcome, sir. It has been nice having company.
OFFICER #2: Well, I’m satisfied.
OFFICER #1: You know it’s very refreshing to have the public cooperate with us.
(EFX- Heartbeat low under scene. The sound grows steadily stronger though the scene.)
ANA: Your job cannot be an easy one.
OFFICER #2: And it isn’t.
(Ana begins to silently respond to the heartbeat.)
OFFICER #1: But you’d have a hard time convincing some people of that.
(The men chuckle.)
OFFICER #2: Are you feeling well, Miss?
OFFICER #1: You seem to be pale.
ANA: I am quite alright. It … it’s early and … and the excitement.
OFFICER #1: I would imagine it isn’t every morning you find police officers wandering through your house.
ANA: Yes, it … it is morning isn’t it.
OFFICER#1: Are you sure you’re feeling well?
ANA: Why do you ask?
OFFICER #2: You really do look pale, Miss.
ANA: A headache. It’s nothing. It’s nothing for you to worry about.
OFFICER #2: Are you sure?
OFFICER #1: You really don’t look well at all.
ANA: No … No I ... I have a sick headache. Not enough sleep.
OFFICER #1: Is there someone you’d like us to call?
