Scripts For Sale "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar" by Edgar Allen Poe Adapted for radio by D. Chapelle The narrator discusses the unusual case of his good friend Ernest Valdemar. He is interested in mesmerism, a process that later developed into hypnotism. He is curious to see what effects mesmerism would have on a dying person. He considers experimenting on Valdemar, an author who has recently been diagnosed with tuberculosis. Valdemar consents to the experiment as he expects to die by midnight of the following evening. Thus, on the following evening Valdemar is mesmerized. In a trance, he reports first that he is dying — then that he is dead. One of the interesting things about doing radio drama is that you don’t have to look the part to perform the part. A short guy can play a basketball player or a sweet little girl can play a cranky old woman or a teenager can play a senior citizen. Case in point is an actor named Casey Kasem. He started playing Shaggy in the Scooby-Doo cartoons when he was thirty-seven years old and kept at it until he was seventy-seven. It also means you can use as few or as many actors as you’d like.
